Carnations— love or loathe? These versatile blooms often divide opinion. Have they come full circle, proving that fashion in flowers is as cyclical as ever? Or will they always remain in the shadow of more lavish blooms? Do carnations deserve a place in your arrangement?
In my opinion, Carnations are one of my favourites. They come in such a wide range of beautiful colours and varieties. I even used them in my own wedding flowers. The most common reason I hear for their dislike is that they're "cheap" flowers. There's certainly no denying that carnations are sturdy and long lasting which makes them cost effective for growers to produce.
Why are carnations controversial?
There is perhaps no other flower that is so divided in that is the carnation. This ruffly flower is a common sight at your local supermarket and has been likened to words like "cheap" and "supermarket flower" for this reason.
What does it mean when someone gives you carnations?
Carnations are said to symbolise devotion, love and fascination – they're the perfect swap if you fancy a change from that bouquet of roses for your partner.
Are carnations back in style?
In recent years, I have seen with my own eyes carnations make a spectacular comeback and being seen as trendy again! Many fellow floral designers are using them for bouquets and wedding arrangements, in addition to the traditional everyday uses. Once underappreciated, thanks to expert growers who have cultivated stunning new varieties. With their lush, fluffy petals and rich color palette, carnations are now a favorite for weddings, events, and daily bouquet deliveries across the Uk.
